All the BOO hydropower projects of the Jaypee Group are Environment friendly run-of-the river projects that do not require any displacement or rehabilitation of people. A key aspect of the construction phase of the Power Plant has been that the execution of the Power Plant has not resulted in the relocation of any person in the area. No families in the area have had to be rehabilitated, since the area submerged by the barrage is contained within the riverbanks and the Power Plant has not involved inundation of surrounding land. However, the Power Plant has resulted in forest-land measuring 23 hectares being diverted for the construction of the Power Plant.

We have already obtained the environment and forest clearance from Ministry of Environment & Forests (MoE&F) vide their letter no. J-12011/1/87-IA-1 dated May 24, 2000 on the condition that we will adopt certain precautionary measures for preventing environmental degradation. The MoE&F had raised certain concerns on the treatment of the catchment area and our environment management plan. We have submitted our environment management plan to the MoE&F and they have accepted the same. We are presently executing the environment management plan through the Forest Department of the GoHP.

We have made a provision of Rs. 245.20 mn in the accounts for the year FY2004 for implementing the environment management plan and the catchment area treatment plan as well as for payments to the forest department of Himachal Pradesh for this purpose. Out of this provision, we have already paid out Rs. l00 mn, including Rs. 58.50 mn to the Forest Department.
Jaiprakash Sewa Sansthan (JSS)
Social responsibility has always been central to Jaypee Group’s business conduct and corporate life. This sense of responsibility has always found expression through the group’s social service arm, a not-for-profit trust by the name of Jaiprakash Sewa Sansthan with special emphasis on education at all levels of the learning curve. This education initiative is catering to over 9000 students through 12 institutes including 3 centres of higher learning.
At our own Baspa – II project site, our sense of responsibility towards the society has found expression in several ways:
• Roads have been built in the vicinity of the project
• Bridges have been constructed in the region
• Funds and expertise for upgrading of existing schools in the region and for developing new ones have been provided
• Health care facilities in the form of a hospital, new dispensary, doctors and medical staff as well as free medicines have been arranged by the company in the vicinity of the project for the benefit of the people of adjoining villages.
• Indirect generation of employment, through better connectivity.
If there is a sole factor behind the Group’s phenomenal rise to success and leadership, then it is the unwritten policy of giving back to the society from which the business derives its own sustenance, through a gamut of facilities for education and social empowerment of people of our nation.
We Call It The Power of Caring.
